Combat against Climate Change

In order to combat climate change, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG) launched this Carbon Saving Platform by calling on each Hong Kong citizen to pledge to reduce CO2 emissions. On average, each Hong Kong citizen generates a greenhouse gas emission equivalent to 6.2 tonnes of CO2 every year 1. CO2 emissions are associated closely with fossil fuel burning as well as our living style, so, by transforming ourselves to a low carbon lifestyle, everyone is able to combat against climate change. You can design your own CO2 emission reduction plan by using our "Carbon Saving Calculator".  Please join us to show your support.

What are the impacts about Climate Change to us?

The definition of "Climate Change" generally refers to any unstable climate. Today, "Climate Change" has become a huge environmental crisis in the human history. We faced the observable sea level rise which flood the low latitude. Over 50% species extinct due to adverse climate change.Climate change disturb the normal rainfall and water system, causing serious drought and desertification which directly affect agriculture production and water supply. Human life and the health of nature and the ecological web are co-related which should be saved by today.

Does Climate Change a natural phenomena?

Some people many account "Climate Change" is a natural phenomena. For the past 60 thousands years, the atmospheric CO2 content reflect the periodic up and down modules. However, the atmospheric CO2 content increased repaidly with the increase in human population and agricultural development right after the glacial period. The atmosperic CO2 level reached the peak in the recent 200 years.

In the past 2 decades, the industry develop rapidly and lead to a high fossil fuel-dependent lifestyle, resulting in the further increase in CO2 emission. On the other hand, human activities, such as logging, changed the landforms which decrease the natural CO2 absoption ability on earth. Researched done by Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii indicated that the concentration of CO2 increased by 15% over the 40 years, from 315ppmv in 1958 to 363ppmv in 1997.

Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) conducted a professional research in order to show more evident that Climate Change was largely related to human activities. The 5th report published in 2014 confirmed that the increased in atmospheric CO2 lead to climate change and the burning of fossil fuel lead to climate change, as a result, concluded that "human activities lead to climate change". One question raised in the report: How could human reduce large amount of atmospheric CO2 in a short period of time?

How could we combat against climate change?

As shown by statistic, we should limit the temperature raise to less than 2 ºC, otherwise, the positive feedback that related to climate change let to further increase of greenhouse gases1. As a result, we need to control the atmospheric CO2 level to 445ppm or below. However, the amount of atmospheric CO2 has been reached 380ppm excluding greenhouse gases such as methane and chlorofluorocarbon. Besides, the lifespan of CO2 is over a hundred year, so, the CO2 we released today will accumulate until year 2109.

1 The positive feedback of climate change refers to the increase intensity of climate change by itself. For example, when ice cap melts resulting in the atmospheric temperature increase, which let to the releasing of large amount of methane - One of the greenhouse gases. The huge amount of methane further intensify climate change.
